Melker of Sweden

Melker of Sweden was founded 2015 in Hammarö with the bold ambition to completely change the outdoor hardware industry. Melker see their innovation, design, research and development as a long-term investment for their company, coming generations and the great outdoors. Making the best products that last and are used is crucial for saving the planet, as is using great quality sustainable materials to make them. Staying true to their philosophy makes it possible for Melker to create a successful business they are proud to run and work for.

Melker of Sweden aims to revolutionize the Outdoor Hardware industry with a focus on balancing environmental ethics and economic viability. Their approach involves continuous innovation and sustainable practices, ensuring their products not only meet user needs but also contribute positively to the planet. To successfully develop innovative, functional, sustainable and great looking products that last for generations Melker continuously develop new ways of doing things.

Latest developments in Melker technology

Melker kayaks are designed and developed in Sweden with Melker’s proprietary plant-based, durable, and feather-light technology. All-natural, sustainable and high-performance construction combines partly plant-based resin and gel coat with flax fibres and a solid cork or PET core, allowing Melker kayaks to achieve the highest possible mechanical properties. A huge step towards realizing Melker’s dream of the most beautiful and also completely sustainable kayak. The goal is a fully circular eco-system where up cycled plant-based waste streams and recycle used materials to remain in use. Responsible serial production

All Melker kayaks are designed and developed in Sweden & responsibly produced in Sri Lanka.

Two Different Constructions are available- Cork which is their lightest and “Trad”

Cork-Core layup

Cork-Core is Melker’s lightest weight and even more sustainable sandwich layup. Made with cork-core, flax in the deck, GreenPoxy resin, and GreenCoat. Produced with premium quality resins, gel coat, fibres, and core materials using vacuum infusion and heat cure process. The Cork Oak Tree is harvested every 9th year and has an average lifespan of over 200 years Cork is not only a versatile and durable material, it is also a sustainable choice with numerous environmental benefits. Harvested from the bark of cork oak trees, the process of extracting cork does not harm or kill the trees, allowing them to continue absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. Additionally, the bark regenerates and can be harvested again every 9th year, making cork a renewable resource. Choosing cork over other materials helps reduce deforestation, as it encourages the preservation of cork oak forests, which are vital ecosystems for biodiversity. Furthermore, cork production generates minimal waste, as the by products are used to make other cork products or even as a renewable energy source. With its positive impact on the environment and its sustainable qualities, cork is undoubtedly the material of the future.

Trad-core layup

Trad-Core is a more traditional sandwich layup with PET soric-core (made of recycled PET bottles), flax in the deck, vinylester resin, and gel coat. Produced with premium quality resins, gel coat, fibers, and core materials using vacuum infusion and heat cure process. AmpliTex™ flax fibres The flax fibre quality, yarn thickness and twist are all highly engineered for optimal mechanical properties in the final product. The fibres are specifically treated to optimise the fibre-matrix interface. We use European flax and the fibremix is thoroughly controlled for consistent quality over time. Flax plants absorb solar energy and CO2 during photosynthesis, store it during growth, and release it upon decomposition or incineration in waste-to-energy facilities. Incineration also recovers valuable energy for heating and electricity production, contributing to the natural carbon cycle. A new era In-house R&D and rapid prototyping using large scale 3D printing, cost-effective high quality and responsible serial production @ Sri Lanka, and new plant-based materials. This is the foundation of Melker of Sweden’s new era of lightweight, high performance, and plant-based kayaks for a better tomorrow. “This is significant for us. We can listen to the market’s needs and quickly 3D print a full-sized prototype in one piece, which we can then intense field test in natural conditions and under different circumstances. Melker repeat the process until we are completely satisfied. In the final step, we manufacture moulds for efficient and sustainable serial production”
