Smart Track THS Set (Rudder Cord)

Smart Track THS kit is a complete set for attaching a rudder cable to a SmartTrack rudder head. It is designed to allow the cable to control the rudder while allowing the mount to swivel helping to avoid cable kinks and making the movement smooth and reliable. This can be used with cord but typically the CRW is preferred as it allows easier length adjustment if cord stretches or adjusting length via knot is to hard. Use of a barrel length adjuster may make the THS rudder cord attachment kit the preferred option due to it’s more minimal cleaner looking design and the length more easily adjusted with the specific adjuster.

You will need some tools. Aluminium swage/crimp (cable lock) is squashed with pliers or a crimping tool to secure the cable around the cable lock.

If you want to remove the rudder for longer transport or maintenance, Smart Track’s THS means you can do it neatly and tool free by releasing the retaining ring and pulling the pin from the rudder housing..

The THS can also be used if you run rudder lines instead of wire. In that case, you tie the line in place rather than crimping it with the cable lock. The advantage of routing the line through the THS instead of fastening it directly to the rudder is that the THS rotates, helping the line avoid chafe at the rudder attachment point.

Note that when used with cable there is no length adjustment available once it is secured (unless the system is fitted with a barrel lock etc at the other end). Smart Track’s CRW kit (cool rudder wedgie)allows length adjustment in cable (and cord)

Kit includes:

• 2 x SmartTrack Hourglass Swage Cable Lock (part no. ST43-820)
• 2 x SmartTrack Shrink Tube (part no. ST43-811)
• 2 x Aglet (Cable End crimp like on the end of a bike brake cable)

The THS cable lock kit is supplied as a pair and is sufficient to secure both sides of the rudder control arms or tiller (on the rudder rear assembly) to the control cable. Does one complete rudder..

Fitting instructions

First thread the cable through the shrink tube, then the aluminium swage. Continue around the cable attachment point and through its eye.

Put the THS on the rudder by positioning the THS cable lock above the rudder line attachment point. Insert the clevis pin (ST44-519) and secure it with the retaining ring (ST44-520). Then thread the cable back through the swage.

Tension the cables to the desired setting, then crimp the swage firmly with pliers (or a swaging tool) ensuring both sides of the cable are secured in the swager locking the cable securely in place- make sure it is secure before you test it for strength. Cut off the excess cable and slide the end cap/ aglet over the cable end to prevent sharp strands sticking out and crimp with pliers. Finally thead the shrink tube over the cable end (so it covers the excess). Shrink it using a hairdryer, very hot water or (carefully) with a lighter.

Please take care to line it up properly prior to crimping as once it is secured the length and tension are set, check the angle of the toe controls are suitable for you etc. Or use a tension adjustment system to fine tune it.

If you have a cord you can skip most of the steps just thread it through and tie a knot. Try and keep the tension even on both sides and pay attention to the position of the foot controls.

The THS cable lock kit fits SmartTrack rudder heads: Original, Flow, Compact, Race, Ski and Ski-B as well as some other brands. This kit is included as part of Smart Track’s Hybrid Foil range of rudders
