Shock cord being stretchy is also used to help things spring back into place (some rudder systems use them on the foot controls) or hold in place where some movement is required such as stiff backrests in kayaks seats.
Other uses are paddle attachments where shock cord can be sewn to a handle or have a deck ball to make it easy to slide your paddle under the cord to keep it out of the way when doing other things)
Shock cord is available in different diameters, your kayak may have several different thicknesses of bungee shock cord depending on the purpose and location. Most shock cord used in kayaks is between 4mm and 6mm in diameter (or Imperial equivalents for kayaks made in the USA etc. e.g. 3/16 inch or 1/4 inch
Shock cord can be secured by means of a knot or an end hook.
Most commonly if using a knot an overhand or double overhand knot makes a stopper to stop the cord pulling through a hole or eyelet and secures through a tight spot
If joining two ends together a double (or triple) fishermans knot (known by some people as the knot they use on their prussik cord).
Please allow for the length these knots take when ordering your shock cord- a double fishermans will take close to 40cm once tied.
Plastic hooks using barbs and a collar that fit quickly and easily over the shock cord end are another common method of attaching.
Other uses are paddle attachments where shock cord can be sewn to a handle or have a deck ball to make it easy to slide your paddle under the cord to keep it out of the way when doing other things)
