Great for those who want the option for more adventure the dagger Stratos is just as at home on tidal estuaries and meandering rivers. The Dagger Stratos 14.5 is the perfect balance of tracking, manoeuvrability, and forgiveness. The 14.5 Foot length of this version of the Stratos gives a bit more speed and storage than Dagger’s 12.5 versions make it and this larger volume version of the 14.5 makes it ideal for medium sized paddlers up.
Beginners will love the stability and forgiveness, while intermediate and expert paddlers will find that the Stratos’s sporty hull is fast and manoeuvrable on any adventure. An adjustable drop-skeg aids tracking, and with two hatches, bulkheads, and deck bungees, gear storage has never been easier. Perfect for multi-day touring adventures, and just as capable for a day trip to your favourite rock garden or surf spot, the Stratos is a do-it-all kayak that stays with you on every step of your journey.
The 14.5 L kayak has a bit more room for larger paddlers. There is another version of the 14.5 for smaller paddlers (or those who like a snugger fit) where the cockpit and volume are different but length is similar. Daggers 12.5 Series is a bit shorter and while designed for tighter turns found in more smaller more aggressive rivers and white water it is still a great touring and flat water kayak. The 12.5 is available in the Larger and Smaller volume for larger and smaller paddlers just like this longer version (14.5 foot or 4.4 metre)

I moved to Okinawa, Japan from Alaska, US in 2021. I have a collection of boats, from WW Crossovers to Sea Kayaks. All are Poly boats due to the extremely abrasive coral reefs and rocks of tidal races and beaches (poly takes shots better and is cheap and quick to repair). The Stratos 14.5L (purchased 2022) is not exactly a speed demon among my 14 foot/4.4m boats given its noticeable rocker for maneuvering. It is though my go to boat for short to medium distance day trips (25-35km) for kayak supported snorkeling, paddling through sea caves and rock gardening, plus overnight camping to difficult to reach remote beaches. Best thing about the Stratos is the ability to throw the boat way up on edge and lock in the secondary stability of the hard chines. Couple that with its mild rocker and it is easy to execute pretty good inside edge turns using high/low braces or outside edge turns using bow/stern rudders. While it does bleed off speed when holding an outside edge turn, it is manageable with C or J strokes in combination with outside sweep strokes. When using the skeg, I find 30% to 50% is all you need for moderate rough water and winds up to 25kmh. More than 50% skeg and you will notice the drag. One bad design point is that notched, plastic cleat used to hold the skeg cord. Mine stopped being effective within a year and no longer held the skeg in any position except fully extended. Not a great thing to have the skeg suddenly deploy in a rock garden or when trying to surf a wave into a beach landing. Fix was 1. strap the skeg in the up position (to take tension off the cord), 2. untie the pull tab, 3. pull the cord out of the back of the cleat, 4. oversize the groove in the cleat (so no longer functional), 5. thread the cord through a spring loaded, micro cord lock and orient it vertically in the channel where the cord exits the deck, 6. re-thread the cord through the cleat, 7. re-tie the pull tab, 8. and yes, unstrap your skeg (to put tension back on the cord). To release the skeg, just press down on the cord lock, then pull back out however much cord you need for skeg angle. I have gotten good enough now to just press and release the cord lock fast enough to only get 30-50% skeg. And if using your boat in salt water, make sure to swap out the cord lock every season so the spring inside does not rust up, stop working or snap.
